RYA Start Yachting Course

The RYA Start Yachting Course provides a short introduction to sailing for complete beginners and is aimed at anyone who wants to try sailing for the first time before committing to a longer course.  The emphasis is on gaining hands-on experience and enjoying sailing.

The course lasts for 2 days, usually over a weekend, and no prior experience is required.  There is no minimum age though many sailing schools require under 18s to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Your instructor will go through the safety procedures with you and make sure you are settled comfortably aboard your yacht before you set sail. He or she will take you through all the basics such as rope work, steering a course, parts of the boat and what they do, and introduce you to sail trimming.  By the end of your first weekend afloat you will have acquired new skills, new friends and you may even find you're hooked for life.

You don't even have to worry about specialist equipment as most sailing schools will provide everything you need for the weekend including wet weather gear, food and bedding.  Just pack some warm, comfortable clothes and focus on enjoying the weekend.

The next step is the RYA Competent Crew Course and holders of the RYA Start Yachting Certificate can complete this course in a reduced time.
