The two day RYA Helmsman's Course covers basic boat handling, engine checks and safety and is ideal for new owners and crew.
You will learn about the basic engine and equipment checks required prior to sailing, how to secure mooring lines and fenders and also learn to tie basic knots. During the two days of the course you will practice handling the motor cruiser in a variety of mooring situations and make short trips to some of the many beautiful harbours and anchorages in the area. Safety equipment, its use and emergency procedures are essential elements of all RYA courses and you will also experience living aboard a motor cruiser.
No prior experience is required for the RYA Helmsman's Course and the minimum age is 12 years, though many sailing schools require under 18s to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
A useful support course is the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course which provides a great introduction to navigation, tides and the rules of the road for new and inexperienced skippers and crew. Those wishing to progress to skippering a motor cruiser will need to attend an RYA Day Skipper Theory course to learn navigation and then go on to complete the RYA Day Skipper practical motor cruising course.
