Plymouth sits in one of the world's great natural harbours and has played a major role in many great seafaring voyages both in the past and now as host port of many major sailing events including the Fastnet Race and Transat.  This 'City of the Sea' has also long been an important Royal Navy base making it a prime target of the Luftwaffe in World War II when the dockyards and the city were destroyed in the Blitz of 1941.  The Barbican area is all that remains of the historic city where you can see the original embarkation point for the Mayflower and visit the oldest working gin distillery in the world as well as enjoy some good pubs and restaurants.  Plymouth Hoe, where Sir Francis Drake reportedly finished a game of bowls before defeating the Spanish Armada, offers stunning views across Plymouth Sound to Devon and Cornwall.

There are a number of marinas around Plymouth with good facilities and a wide range of Marine Services.  Sutton Harbour Marina is closest to the Barbican and city centre for those wanting to enjoy Plymouth's pubs, restaurants and many attractions.
