Menai Strait Cruising Guide

Berthing    Charts    Navigation    Tides    Weather

The protected waters of the Menai Strait extend from the north end past Beaumaris and Bangor to Menai Bridge, through the notorious Swellies and on to Port Dinorwic and Caernarfon.  Tides here are fierce, reaching 8 knots and more at times, and because the tide enters the Strait from both ends there can be some interesting conditions.

However, it is worth the effort as the Menai Strait is beautiful with some lovely places to visit ashore.  Beaumaris has a castle, numerous antique shops, fantastic views over the Snowdonia mountains and lots of pubs and bistros in which to enjoy those views.  Bangor dries but is home to Dickies Boatyard, where it is possible to lift out and obtain spares and repairs if necessary.  Nearby Menai Bridge has nearly as many pubs as Beaumaris and lies in a particularly beautiful part of the Strait.

If you go through the Swellies at the right time and carefully follow the pilotage instructions, you may wonder what all the fuss is about.  However, go through at the wrong time at your peril!

After the Swellies, on the mainland side of the Strait, there are marinas at both Port Dinorwic (Y Felinheli) and Caernarfon and another impressive castle.
